This is a silver medal with an inlay made of the metal bismuth. Bismuth can take on crystalline forms and take on tarnish colors under laboratory conditions. The crystals are therefore unique in shape and color.
How did the idea for creating the Space Medal come about?
The uniqueness of synthetic bismuth crystals could easily be combined with the theme of science fiction and space. This gave rise to the idea of combining bismuth in this form with a medal.
What are the special features of the product?
The special thing about bismuth is that they are unique. The crystals can form under limited laboratory conditions, but without complete control in shape and color. Nature and the laws of physics create unique pieces.
What materials was the medal made from? Which materials can be seen?
The medal is made of fine silver and pure bismuth. However, all combinations of materials are possible.
What challenges were there during development and production?
Bismuth is very fragile. The challenge was to mechanically process the bismuth crystals in order to fit them precisely into the medal. We want to use a flat component with the individual crystals.
Is development still continuing?
Development is a constant companion. The combination of new materials is being planned.
